Hand made lampworked beads ...
Lampworked glass beads are made in a flame from a torch. The flame is used to melt rods of glass (which are shaped like a pencil) around a thin piece of hardened steel wire.
The piece of steel is called a mandrel; this is coated with bead release to stop the glass sticking when you want to remove it - the bead release dissolves away in warm water and the bead is freed, where the mandrel was, there is now a hole so you can make jewellery with it.
I have been making my own jewellery for absolutely ages and professionally for the past three years. Previously, I have always purchased the components and my main skill has been in putting them together in a pleasing design. I make what I like myself and fortunately, enough other people like what I make and I have managed to be full time at it for quite a long time now.
I started dreaming of making my own glass beads to add to my range when I bought a couple of how to do it books from Amazon in the Spring. On 22 May 2007 I received my first order of glass rods, frit, aventurine, silver leaf and other bits and pieces from Tuffnell Glass (what lovely people they are!) I already had a torch, tools and some MAPP gas which I use to make jewellery and ever since then, I have been desperately trying to fit in melting glass around my jewellery business. I never seem to get enough time!
